It is worth noting that as the owner of a domestic alarm system you do have responsibilities under law.
Legislation states an alarm should not continue for more than 20 minutes. Non-compliance with this could see a fine for noise pollution from your local authority.
The council can serve an abatement notice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requiring the person responsible to stop the noise. It is also a criminal offence to not comply with an abatement notice and the local authority has a range of powers to ensure that the notice is complied with.
To avoid problems make sure your alarm is fitted with a 20-minute cut-off device and register a keyholder with the council and the police station.
Council environmental health officers do have the power to break into you home to silence your alarm if a nuisance exists!
